The Graduate School leads in the creation of inclusive cultures and innovative practices which allows graduate students to thrive. In many ways, graduate students are the lifeblood of the university. They are often at the vanguard of world-improving research through their research and their work with faculty; their long hours of study enable levels of expertise that ultimately animate humankind’s greatest achievements; and their work teaching undergraduates is essential to the function of the university.

To promote the highest standards in scholarship for graduate students, we provide workshops and training on mentoring, writing, teaching and more. We strive for student success and well-being throughout their education with community groups, leadership groups and professional development resources. Graduate Women in Science Conference complements the efforts of the Graduate School.

The Department of Computational Mathematics, Science and Engineering (CMSE) at Michigan State University is unique: it is the first to recognize computation as a new discipline, rather than being broken into isolated sub-disciplines. CMSE comprehensively treats computation as the junction between algorithm development and analysis, high performance computing, and computational modeling and data science. Our PhD program builds a foundation in advanced computing and mathematical algorithms, which our students then apply to research across many fields, from astrophysics to horticulture to medicine.  We are a premier research institute embedded at Michigan State University and funded by the US Department of Energy and other funding bodies. Our mission is to discover how photosynthetic organisms work on the molecular level, in order, ultimately, to develop technologies that improve human lives. We have three areas of focus: Our basic reach examines how photosynthetic organisms capture energy, do metabolism, and protect themselves. We also develop ground-breaking technologies to address energy and food challenges. Finally, we pride ourselves in providing graduate students and post-docs a quality research and educational environment.
